Over twenty Olympic champions, coaches and further international athletes have endorsed a statement demanding a halt to the capital punishment of a boxing titleholder and trainer, who is sentenced to die in the country.

Escalating Global Anger

During growing worldwide anger over Iran’s escalating use of the death penalty as a tool of suppression, the powerfully expressed statement censures the government's verdict to maintain the capital punishment of the boxing champion.

Vafaei Sani, thirty, from Mashhad in the northern province, was taken into custody for participating in nationwide protests in two thousand nineteen and indicted of supporting an dissident organization. He has spent half a decade in incarceration, where he has been tortured and confined in seclusion.

“Competition is meant to encourage optimism, unity, and fortitude,” the supporters wrote. “The capital punishment of a titleholder for his opinions is a clear violation on these ideals and a warning to every athlete who dares to speak out.

Record of Killing Athletes

The statement said that the athlete's situation was not unique and underscored the nation's record of sentencing to death athletes for their beliefs, including a football captain, captain of the national football team, and Fourouzan Abdi, leader of the women's volleyball squad. Other signatories to the letter include Tracy Edwards, who led the inaugural all-female crew in a round-the-world competition and was the first woman to earn a prestigious nautical honor; the previous skipper of the national squad a sports advocate; and a footballer, who was in the country's selection for the global tournament.

Apprehension and Unfair Trial

The boxer was detained in the spring of 2020. The charges against him entailed “spreading corruption on Earth through incendiarism and ruin of government belongings”. His verdict has been annulled twice but on October 4 it was maintained on the third attempt. His court case was criticized as “highly unjust” by advocates and groups.

Urging to UN

The urging to halt the boxer's death sentence comes after a previous appeal to the global human rights chief for human rights, backed by over one hundred advocates and organizations, calling for action to stop the sports figure's execution.

Execution Crisis

As per data, there is an “execution crisis in the country, which has attained horrific levels”. In the year 2023, authorities sentenced at least 853 people – a nearly half rise on 2022.
